Railroad Crossing Inventory

Railroad Crossing Improvements are selected statewide based on traffic counts, number of trains and predicted accident ratios.

The MACOG maintains a database inventory of railroad crossings in Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall, and St. Joseph Counties.  Records kept on these crossings consist of physical information, traffic and train counts, accident information, and other safety related facts for each crossing.  The information for each crossing is updated every three years.  The updates are accomplished by an on-site inspection, of which a third are done each year.  Traffic counts and accident data for the area are also included in the report.  The information is used to make suggestions to INDOT for improvements to railroad crossings throughout the region.  Without this data, our region's railroad crossings would not compete favorably for much-needed federal railcrossing improvement funds.
